B-HEARD - the Behavioral Health Emergency Assistance Response Division - is part of New York City's commitment to treat mental health crises as public health problems - not public safety issues. The licensed social worker (LMSW) provides frontline emergency response in the community, supporting children to older adults experiencing mental health crises, substance use challenges, suicidality, trauma, and acute stress. Core responsibilities include de-escalation, brief crisis interventions, comprehensive risk assessments, and rapid connection to appropriate services. This role requires excellent judgement, adaptability, and the ability to engage effectively in unpredictable and high-pressure environments. Orientation and training is provided to fully prepare you for this role.
The duties are primarily performed in field-based settings. Some of the physical activities include working outdoors in all kinds of weather, climbing stairs, treating individuals who may have infectious and communicable diseases, working for extended periods during the day or night in a vehicle, working in confined spaces such as trains and buildings, treating individuals at heights such as rooftops, bridges or elevated highways, and carrying a mobile radio for communication purposes. The Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Defense Practice has one opening for a Mitigation Specialist in the Brooklyn office of the Adolescent Intervention and Diversion Program. The Adolescent Intervention and Diversion Program specializes in working with adolescents who are charged as adults in criminal and Supreme court matters. These client’s range in age from 13 to 18 years old and often have experienced a multitude of traumas including childhood neglect and abuse, long term poverty, educational disruptions, mental illness, substance abuse, physical illness, and developmental and intellectual disabilities. These experiences impact their functioning level and provide mitigating circumstances that must be incorporated in the defense advocacy. The Mitigation Specialist works directly with an assigned AID attorney to strategize a plan that incorporates both legal and therapeutic approaches to mitigate the court case and meet the individualized needs of the adolescent client. Participating in the intake process in Supreme Court and other hearings and providing both oral and written advocacy in collaboration with the assigned attorney is a key aspect of this role. The Mitigation Specialist will interact with the client, family members, friends, school personnel, service providers, and community members, among others. The Mitigation Specialist is also an integral part of the process in advocating for removal to family court.

This Mitigation Specialist position will partner with the MICA attorney and the Mental Health attorney providing comprehensive services to clients who are primarily diagnosed with mental health and substance use disorders. While working closely with criminal defense attorneys specializing in mental health law, the Mitigation Specialist is responsible for providing assessment, treatment planning, referrals, case management, and in-court advocacy for clients facing 730 exams; developing dispositional and re-entry plans for clients being released from state mental health facilities; establishing and participating in collaborative alliances with various institutional, judicial and governmental entities; and providing transitional and crisis counseling to clients.
As part of the legal team, the Mitigation Specialist also helps clients navigate through legal and social service systems and create case plans to address their identified needs. The Criminal Defense Practice has an opening for a Forensic Social Worker in its Staten Island office to provide client services. While working closely with the Criminal Defense attorneys, the Forensic Social Worker’s (FSW) primary role is to interview clients, and any collateral contacts, with the goal of gathering a life history to highlight mitigating circumstances such as mental illness, drug addiction, trauma and/or chronic poverty leading to a client’s involvement in the criminal justice system.

The Mental Health department offers individual, group, family, and couples’ therapy to community members. We provide services to clients ranging from early childhood to people experiencing end of life issues. We offer medication intervention as well as psychiatric evaluation and management. For enrolled clients, the clinic has a 24/7 crisis line, monitored by clinical supervisors. We take a trauma informed perspective to the work with the community, which includes various therapeutic modalities such as CBT, Psychodynamic, and creative art therapies. MAJOR PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Legal Aid Society’s Civil Practice has an opening for a Forensic Social Worker within the Elder Law Unit. The Elder Law Unit provides legal representation and support to seniors in housing court at risk of eviction. Elder Law Unit clients often present with substantial needs inextricably linked with the core eviction defense case. These needs/situations most often include (1) cognitive limitations or decline; (2) physical and/or mental health related disabilities, (3) Elder Abuse (physical, financial, emotional); (4) inability to continue to live in the community without additional support (medical, financial etc); (4) are not receiving all of the benefits they could be eligible for; and (5) other issues stemming from one or more of the above. Addressing these complex needs are integral to maintaining a client centered focus in the representation and to allow the client to maintain autonomy and to live in the community safely as long as possible. The Forensic Social Worker works as a team with the Staff Attorneys and Paralegals to provide this multi-disciplinary model of client-centered assistance in which we address many of the needs of the clients.
