About B-HEARD

B-HEARD - the Behavioral Health Emergency Assistance Response Division - is part of New York City's commitment to treat mental health crises as public health problems - not public safety issues. For the first time in New York City's history, teams of health professionals - including mental health professionals from NYC Health + Hospitals and EMS personnel from NYC Fire Department - are responding to 911 mental health calls. Social Workers on the team operate across a range of shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays and service communities in the Bronx, Upper Manhattan, Central Brooklyn and Western Queens.

About the Role: Social Worker Level II

NYC H+H seeks Social Workers motivated to join a pioneering initiative and have a transformative impact on the lives of people experiencing mental health challenges in Queens, New York.


The licensed social worker (LMSW) provides frontline emergency response in the community, supporting children to older adults experiencing mental health crises, substance use challenges, suicidality, trauma, and acute stress. Core responsibilities include de-escalation, brief crisis interventions, comprehensive risk assessments, and rapid connection to appropriate services. This role requires excellent judgement, adaptability, and the ability to engage effectively in unpredictable and high-pressure environments. Orientation and training is provided to fully prepare you for this role. 




 





 

Job Responsibilities

The duties are primarily performed in field-based settings. Some of the physical activities include working outdoors in all kinds of weather, climbing stairs, treating individuals who may have infectious and communicable diseases, working for extended periods during the day or night in a vehicle, working in confined spaces such as trains and buildings, treating individuals at heights such as rooftops, bridges or elevated highways, and carrying a mobile radio for communication purposes.  When in the field, administrative tasks such as telephone calls, virtual meetings, and medical record documentation are typically done in a moving vehicle.


Example of Typical Tasks:

·        Conduct crisis evaluations, including risk and safety assessments

·        Deliver crisis intervention, de-escalation and engagement strategies in the field

·        Develop rapid, patient-centered disposition plans

·        Access and leverage real-time health information

·        Collaborate with natural supports and community resources

·        Complete timely documentation that meets quality standards

·        Participate in ongoing educational and development opportunities, and supervision Provide peer support and orient new Social Workers

·        Participate in team, borough, program, and departmental meetings

·        Adhere to H+H, city, state, and federal standards and regulations

·        Model person-centered, recovery-oriented, trauma-informed and culturally responsive practice

·        Perform other duties as assigned


Work Location & Schedule: Queens

B-HEARD Social Workers working in Queens may operate across a range of shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays. Social Worker Level IIs work a condensed work schedule with shifts ranging from 8:45am to 1:30am and rotate between EMS stations, NYC H+H facilities, and field-based response.

Job Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

·        Master’s Degree in Social Work

·        A valid Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW) license issued by the New York State Education Department

·        At minimum, one-year experience working with people with serious mental illness (e.g. mobile crisis team, mobile treatment team, community-based health provider, hospital emergency room, inpatient psychiatric care) and three years’ experience preferred

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Requirements

·        Mental health evaluation/risk assessment

·        Mental health and substance use

·        Disposition planning

·        Field-based service

·        Motivational Interviewing

·        Personal or family lived experience with behavioral health valued
